NEW CONES

Australian Pine (Pinus nigra Arnold)*

Resembles Red Pine in its needles, but can be distinguished from it by its dark brown bark; silvery-white buds; and yellow-brown cones 2-3 inches long, armed with a short spine, which fall intact from the twigs.

Coastal Lodgepole Pine (Pinus contorta var. latifolia Engelm)

This is a more twisted cone tree from the Pacific Northwest, much taller than it’s counterpart from colder climates. Shore Pine (Pinus contora var. contora) is a stunted, short-leaved, twisted conbe tree over traditional Lodgepole (Canada). The cone is more open, and perfect for wreathing. Often confused with Scotch Pine, primarily from the Mid-West (naturalized).

Norway Spruce [Picea abies (L.) Karsten ]

Probably the most beautiful of the Spruces, this tree is best known for it’s use at Christmas. Cones range from 4 to 7 inches long; drooping foliage; needles are 4-sdied and not prickly; common European ornamental. While it most grows in the mid-West, this cone is collected from lawn maintanence efforts on the West Coast.
